WOOGIE WEEKEND 2016, Wiggled Willfully Into Whatever You Wish

woogie4

Written by Lizzie Rose

Woogie Weekend is one of the more unique festival experiences available to the modern festival goer today. After its debut last summer, the festival celebrated it’s second birthday in style by bringing in some of the freshest techno and deep house artists along with a return to an incredible venue. An entire festival descended from the vibe of the Woogie stage at Lightning in a Bottle, Woogie Weekend definitely made it’s momma proud. Grass and trees decorated the landscape while a wooden bridge created a romantically lit path over a pond in the middle of the venue. Two stages played host to three days of music and vendors lined the perimeter in between. Captivating final touches decorated the space, with art installations seen earlier this year at Lightning In a Bottle and gorgeous hexagon accents lined with the signature Woogie colored stripes.

Now that the scene is set, lets discuss the vibe. “The Woogie” is more than just a stage at LIB or a festival, the word itself insinuates movement and flow and kind of makes you smile without knowing why. You can’t see “The Woogie” or touch “The Woogie” or even explain “The Woogie” but you know its real because it feels like baselines pulsing through your veins or the pressure in your calves while you dance. It leaves you satisfied with the experience yet wanting more.

woogie2

The festival lineup was filled with an expansive amount of diverse talent and an array of different types of techno spanning from ambient to dark. Though each performance as unique in it’s own way, some certainly managed to stand out. Mark Farina played some captivating deep house with a modern disco feel that kept the energy high. Extra Welt was dark and pulsating, Damian Lazarus hit the crowd with hard upbeat techno, and Jon Hopkins mellowed the vibe with beautiful and melodic sounds. On Sunday, Lee Reynolds crushed it, pumping everyone up with a funky dance party and giving Desert Hearts life into the crowd, overpowering many sore feet and hangovers. TEED closed it off with his amazing musical transitions and an after hours set by Doc Marten brought back his old school roots keeping the party going while paying respect to the roots of the scene.

Woogie’s fashion vibe was filled with countless eccentric souls inspired to be colorful and free. Lots of funky clothing representing new adaptations to older styles of hippie chic fashions were extremely popular as well as modern glittering garments, a perfect expression of the enticing and flashy vibe apparent in the air. With the weather keeping everyone a sweaty shade of hot in the daytime, Woogie introduced many water based activities (like water balloon fights and slip and slides) allowing people to wear swimsuit/bodysuit type clothing, and allowed for total temperature comfort with only a light jacket at night. The freedom of expression at Woogie allowed individuals to get as creative as they wanted with their wear, giving a psychedelic color explosion feel to the crowds.

woogie1

Woogie Weekend surpassed many challenges that a new festival often struggles with, with grace and finesse. The organization and layout of the festival were highly functional and all of the visual and audial artists seemed carefully chosen in line with the tailored vibe of the experience. The small and intimate atmosphere made it easy to feel safe and comfortable exploring alone, and the grounds were a canvas for creativity as festival goers shaped their realities. Whether you took a long romantic walk across the bridge, danced for hours with your friends, or even if you met someone new,  Woogie Weekend was willing and able to be shaped into any experience you desired.

Annand Oasis Curates Their First “Yoga Restival”

Restival-6

Annand Oasis Yoga Restival

Words & photos by Casey McCune

Event promoters are constantly looking to create new experiences for their attendees as we have all seen the additions of bigger stages, new locations, line up additions and surprise guests. Yet we are always left wondering if there is anything else out there. When I came across the announcement of a ‘Yoga Restival’ hosted by Annand Oasis, I was intrigued to say the least. The “line up” included not only music, but also a variation of yoga classes from an essential oil themed class to Thai yoga massage, and just about everything in between. Workshops such as hooping 101 and sound healing baths filled the sun soaked days as well.

Annand Oasis not only blurred the line between festival and retreat, they erased the line with their first ever Restvial. The 4 day event took place at Liberty Advance’s retreat center located in Boulevard, CA, about an hour east of San Diego. Here are some of the highlights we experienced over the 4th of July weekend.

Restival-1 (1)

Yoga for All Levels

As a relative newcomer to Yoga, I was wondering how I would fair at an event like this. I quickly saw how silly my apprehensions were a few minutes into my first class. Instructors were very helpful and welcoming, assisting newbies like myself while keeping a good flow for the rest of the class. Offering classes of varying types from morning to night, Yoga Restival had something for everyone.

Sound Healing

If you have never heard of a sound bath you are probably in the majority.  Prior to the Restival, I had zero knowledge either.  I decided to check it out, why not, because when in Rome right? By the end of the weekend I had four sound baths under my belt.  The final one being while gazing up at the starry night sky on the last night at 11:11 when sound healer,  Shane Chunephisal took us on a journey and expanded our consciousness.

Restival-13

Immersive Experience

Being so far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life created an experience all its own.  Being only miles from the US/Mexico border and surrounded by nothing but rolling hills covered with large rocks, there was little to distract you from your intention of being there, relaxation.  With zero light pollution, the stars became an attraction all their own after the sun set.  Liberty Advance’s property, complete with swimming pool, open air showers, hot tubs, saunas and campground created the perfect atmosphere for a one of a kind escape.

The Music, Of Course!

After the sun set and the stars lit up the sky, the nights at Annand Oasis’ Yoga Restival were filled with music to perfectly complement the setting.  With DJs such as Desert Dwellers, Brad Moontribe, Aaron Jacobs and Ben Annand, the music kept us moving throughout the night.  Sitting outside on the balcony with my girlfriend Crystal, under the stars that could only be described as awe inspiring while listening to Ben Annand drop some deep atmospheric house, was by far one of the best memories of the weekend. Come for the Yoga, stay for the house music.

Restival-24

Sunrise to Sunset

With a full line up of things to do from sunrise to sunset and beyond, I wasn’t sure how much relaxation I would actually get at Yoga Restival. While there was always something going on, the flow of the weekend was far from fast paced. Crystal and I chose classes we wanted to attend and in between we went swimming, cooked healthy meals back at our tent, explored the surrounding nature and danced the night away.

A far cry from the overly stimulating electronic music festivals I am used to, the Annand Oasis Yoga Restival was an experience I won’t soon forget.  We often talk about the vibes at festivals and events, of which I have attended a wide array, and yet I have never experienced a vibe quite like this. Being a yoga newbie at a yoga retreat I was weary of how I would find my place,  but in the end I left wanting more and looking forward to the next.

Festival Fashion Spotlight On ‘SPIRIT FLAGS’

multi

With EDC just passing, festival season is heating up fast. With the season already in motion, festivals this year have seen an increased attendance and interest across the country. Festivals are the perfect place to let a certain part of your personality that others don’t typically see out on the prowl. We experiment with different versions of ourselves that don’t typically get out to play. Oftentimes we express those selves with the fashion that we choose. From elaborate outfits to something that makes you feel comfortable and free, what you wear truly affects your mood throughout the day and night.

Today we’re focusing on not only a new style of clothing, but rather an entire new concept. The Spirit Flag takes on a whole new shape integrating the design and nature of a flag and breeding it with a hood. The result? A colorful and comfortable lovechild that allows you the mystery of a hood but the freedom of a cape. That’s right people, you literally become a psychedelic flying squirrel. With multiple ways to sport your Spirit Flag, you can also become a wizard, a superhero, one of those Olympic guys that carry the flags, a fortune teller with a giant head-wrap, and just generally awesome.

demo (2)

The Spirit Flag was introduced through a Kickstarter campaign that reached it’s goal within the first week. For donors to the campaign, the flags can be totally customized using a digital easel. That means that you can slap any picture or custom desgn on the flag and wear it as a statement. “Flags are epic and iconic.” the kickstarter states, “They have long been a symbol of unity to encompass the many passions, teams, and interests that identify us. Our mission is that it’s okay to be different and to share your true self. “

The Spirit Flag is a new product from Shirtwascash, an underground but established brand that sells all sorts of vibrant off the wall clothing. Though the Spirit Flag Kickstarter just ended, but you can still check out the campaign here or the Instagram account here. The flags will soon be up for retail on shirtwascash.com – and we can’t wait. If you happened to be in Vegas EDC week, you may have seen a few flying around the speedway. The flags certainly make you feel mischievous and playful.

We can’t wait to watch this brand grow.

While we usually convey our thoughts of post festival reviews in words sprinkled with a few pictures, this time we’re going for the latter. EDM BIZ 2016: Where History Meets The Future

Written by Lizzie Rose for Electronica Life

edmbiz2

The culture of EDM is constantly evolving, much like music itself. Tracing back a few generations, the steady flow of sound has taken on many forms, constantly in motion and adapting to certain tastes or styles from jazz to rock and roll, from pop to techno. Edm hosts a whole world in itself, as the sub-genre mainstream popular favorite traces through styles like techno, dubstep, house, trap, and countless others. EDMbiz was a two day conference taking place in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas preceding EDC weekend dedicated to exploring new possibilities of EDM culture while honoring the history of its development.

EDMbiz is where the history of EDM culture meets the human desire to evolve. Within the industry, we are constantly pushing for the next best thing or the album/artist that’s going to trump those before them, yet we have a fierce loyalty to our roots. This was apparent throughout EDMBiz while speakers like Michael Tullberg, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, Pasquale Rotella told of their experiences and insights while vendors in the Expo showed off new inventions, developments, and technologies.

edmbiz1

The highlight of the conference, for me, was the “Beyond The Boys’ Club: What’s Next For Women In Dance Music” seminar. Seven panelists sat at the front of the largest conference room debating the inequality, progress, and accomplishments of women in the industry. As the conversation fluttered from topic to topic, the bottom line that resonated with me long after I left was the message that it is so important for women to mentor and empower other women. I think this model can be applied to any industry caterpillar hoping to turn into a butterfly, collaborate with those more experienced than you to learn the foundations how to do something- and then add your own unique touch.

EDMbiz was a truly awesome experience- anyone interested in upping their game and moving forward in the name of shaping the future should definitely check it out.

Why The World Needs Festivals Like Lightning In A Bottle

-jacob avanzato--2090

Words by Crystal Garcia & Photos by Jacob Avanzato

The world is a crazy and chaotic place to live in today. Terrible things happen everyday that just can’t be made sense of no matter how hard you may try. It’s difficult to open the news tab on your phone in the morning because you already know what you’re in for- murders, shootings, bombings, war, etc. We live in a world where this has become the social norm and we’ve grown accustomed to hearing horrible news while thinking to ourselves “that’s sad” or “that sucks”, and move on with our day’s, most likely never to ponder on it again. As the saying goes,”out of sight, out of mind.”

We continue moving through our daily lives as if the rest of the world is doing just as fine as we are. Flipping off and yelling at the car that cut you off on the way to work because he’s a dick for doing that to you. Avoiding eye contact with every face you pass on the street because who even does that anymore. Getting upset with the barista who must be incompetent for messing up your coffee order that requires more than ten words to pronounce.

But what if the driver who cut you off was speeding to get his epileptic son to the hospital? Or, what if one of those strangers you avoided eye contact with is suffering from severe depression and a simple smile could’ve changed their entire day? What if you knew the barista messed up your order because she had just spent the entire night awake watching over her dying father? While these are all hypothetical ‘what if’s’, they happen everyday in life without us realizing even in the slightest.

-jacob avanzato--0170

In light of the recent tragedies in Orlando where fifty people were killed at a gay nightclub, a place where gay men felt safe to fully express themselves, it is more important than ever that we take these what if’s into account in daily life. What if the man that committed this crime who was full of fear and hate, was instead shown genuine kindness, compassion, and love throughout his life? Would he have still done it? There’s no way to know, but I can’t help but to think most likely not.

This is where Lightning In A Bottle, a “transformational” festival, becomes of utter importance in today’s world. Besides everything that makes up the four day festival aesthetically, the headlining artists, grandeur stages, psychedelic art and beautiful people, at the core of this festival is compassion, creativity, community and love. Without these components, the festival wouldn’t be a true LIB experience.

As I walked across multiple bridges on the vast festival grounds over Memorial Day Weekend last month, I stayed silent as I listened to the conversations of people passing by walking in the opposite direction, while hearing some of the most endearing words you would only expect to hear in some sort of Utopian land. Just a few of the discussions I heard included passerbyers saying “self care,” “so much fun” and my favorite words “love it all,” as two friends embrace each other with a hug and laughter, each with a twinkle in their eye and a permanent smile across their face.

-jacob avanzato--0962

The humanly interactions were not only limited to words as it was completely normal for the person passing to look you in the eye and smile, in fact it would be quite odd if someone didn’t. It wasn’t any surprise for every single person passing to attempt to give you a high five, regardless of your skin color, religion, ethnicity, gender, or even if that hand of yours was the filthiest thing in the festival. It didn’t matter who you were before entering the festival or where you came from, you’re at LIB now. You are here. You are community. You are loved. You are family.

These inspirational moments carried on for me throughout the weekend, every day catching me by surprise right when I couldn’t imagine it possibly getting any better. I recall the first night when I found one of my best friends in a crowd of people exactly when I needed her most. I was enveloped in the most loving hug that left me in tears of happiness, which turned into three hugs because we both couldn’t get enough. Or when I took a powerful yoga class with my boyfriend Casey and it connected us in a way I otherwise would have never thought possible.

I’ll admit that I entered the festival that first day emotionally and mentally drained from life occurrences the weeks beforehand, but quickly found myself feeling much lighter and free by Sunday. The collective energy had peaked by the last day, and everything flowed naturally. I found my friends effortlessly and made new ones. Watched the last sunset filled with pink and purple hues atop the peak of a hill at the meditation outlook with Casey. We made it just in time to see Lee Burridge close out the Woogie Stage as we happily stuffed our faces with my favorite raw pad thai from l.o.v.e’s kitchen.

-jacob avanzato--7264

We Drank delicious licorice tea in the ‘Om Shan Tea’ yurt as Chet Faker performed my favorite songs including ‘No Diggity’ on The Lightning Stage. Viewed Saturn through a telescope at the onsite Black Rock Observatory and burst into laughter after hearing the technician enthusiastically yell out “last call for Saturn,” as we laid out in a geometric dome art installation while looking at a plethora of stars sparkle in the dark night sky at 3 am. You get the idea, it was absolutely magical.

Many have their own perception of what a transformational festival is or isn’t. Some tend to think it’s a hippie type festival where hippies gather and do ‘hippie stuff’, others may think it’s just another music and arts festival amongst the influx of festivals offered today. I can’t tell you what LIB is or isn’t, as it’s a festival so complex that must be attended to truly understand. What I can tell you is that the experiences such that occur at LIB are what the world needs NOW.

You’re free to let go of your worries, fears, anxiety and stress, in fact it will be difficult not to. Your ego will want to judge the people you’re not familiar with, until you end up camped right next to them and realize they’re a few of the kindest people you’ve ever met. They’ll feed you food you would never otherwise dare try. Even when you resist they insist, so you succumb and are pleasantly surprised by how delicious it is. When you awake with a massive hangover the next morning, they’ll be right there with everything you need to recover and you’ll come to find how grateful you are for people you would’ve previously avoided eye contact with at all cost.

-jacob avanzato--9768

You’ll be surrounded by a bunch of weirdos, and realize how much you now enjoy being the weirdo you’ve always been because you can’t remember the last time you laughed and smiled this much. You’ll be having a ridiculously fun time and suddenly be confronted with things in your life that you may have been ignoring and it’s probably going to hurt, but soon after you’ll be showered with love by a total stranger and realize everything that’s happened in your life has been leading up to this moment.

Now you’re fully present in the moment, the most present you’ve ever been in your entire life. Your heart will be so full that you think it’s going to explode, so you don’t know what else to do but frolic around giving love to anyone who will receive it. You’ll spend the rest of the weekend enjoying life for what it is basking in the company of strangers, astonished at how capable you are of feeling raw happiness and love.

You’ll return home to your parents wondering what’s happened to you and your friends not recognizing you. You’ll return to reality, but not without pondering what life would be if you could take your experience into daily life, constantly thinking “what if?” Quickly you come to find the world would be a different place if everyone was given the opportunity to have these experiences, and you make it a point to take what you’ve learned and put it into practice in the ‘real world.’ Suddenly your entire LIB experience makes complete sense and you can finally comprehend why they call it a “transformational” festival, because really…what else would you call this?

“You may say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one,
I hope someday you’ll join us,
and the world will be as one.”
-John Lennon
