Dirty Beats & A Really Fun Name – An Interview w/ Candyland

*written by A’Damaged Pro for Electronica Life

There are ups and downs to technology, but we’re not here to discuss that. If you asked Siri to “show me where the BASS gets dropped in Santa Barbara,” “she” would probably direct you to a music store somewhere. Where she should be directing you is to the studio where Candyland produces their tracks. Josie and Ethan are on a roll right now. From touring with Krewella and spotlighting their talent at festivals around the country, there is no end in sight for these two.

Children of the 80s have one thing that pops to mind when the name “Candyland” comes up, and that’s the once iconic board game. I’m happy to say that the namesake is being utilized in a much more energetic fashion now. I’ll take the heavy, dirty beats of Josie and Ethan, best friends now-turned killer duo, over lollypop lanes and licorice mountains any day. After seeing their mind-blowing and high octane performance at EDC Orlando, I can recommend, without hesitation, that everybody needs to get on “Team Candyland.”

A’Damaged Pro – Can you explain the origin of the name “Candyland?”

Candyland – We were hanging out at my house just thinking of new names, and Ethan yelled out Candyland and it was my moms favorite, and we wanted it to be easy to say, no connection to the board game.

A’Damaged Pro – Where did you grow up?

Candyland – We both grew up in Santa Barbara, California.

A’Damaged Pro – Did you play an instrument when you were younger?

Candyland – We both play guitar, drums, and bass guitar. Ethan also plays piano.

A’Damaged Pro – What were your earliest musical influences?

Candyland – Michael Jackson, Weezer, Nirvana…Early 2000s music haha.

A’Damaged Pro – How have those influences evolved as you have matured?

Candyland – I think that the music I listened to early on is the reason why I listen to what I do today.. Like Linkin Park and System of A Down got me into hardcore ect…

A’Damaged Pro – When did you know that you wanted to start making music?

Candyland – Professionally I think Ive always wanted to do music.

A’Damaged Pro – Do you feel that where you have lived has affected your style of music?

Candyland – Santa Barbara has a really active college town and the DJ scene was always really big because of that. That definitely influenced us.

A’Damaged Pro – Who are some artists that inspire you? How does their music speak to you?

Candyland – Memphis May Fire makes music with lyrics I can relate to.

A’Damaged Pro – Do you enjoy producing or performing more?

Candyland – For Ethan producing. Myself I prefer to perform.

A’Damaged Pro – Can you describe the creative process of your new single, “Breathless?”

Candyland – It was an older song that we made for a side group we were going to do. Instead we just decided to take the chance and release a big room song with Candyland.

A’Damaged Pro – Name 3 artists that you would like to collaborate with and how you feel your musical style would complement theirs.

Candyland – Skrillex – We would make something WEIRD. Knife Party – I think our sounds would just create something super energetic. Sam Smith – Would just love to work with him.

A’Damaged Pro – You’re no stranger to playing for large crowds, but how does it feel knowing you will be headlining your first show on December 13th, at one of L.A.’s most well-known venues, Avalon?

Candyland – Avalon has a lot of great memories attached to it, and playing there was always a dream, so to be HEADLINING it is insane.

A’Damaged Pro – Any new projects on the horizon?

Candyland – Always working on new music. More originals ;]

Candyland has an upcoming show at LA’s Avalon. Be sure to check it out and support!
